Patong, Kata and Karon: compare the setting
Patong combines a beach with a developed visitor district of accommodation, restaurants and shops. Choose it when having those services around the day matters to you. Farther along the west coast, Karon and Kata make another useful area to compare. The provincial tourism information distinguishes Kata Yai and Kata Noi, so use the specific beach name when arranging a pickup. None of these names establishes the conditions on arrival. A coast day can work around a walk, lunch and time in the shade even when swimming is unsuitable.
Nai Yang and Surin: build a different coast day
Nai Yang is associated with Sirinath National Park, while Surin is a separate west-coast beach farther south. Put each on the map against your starting address before deciding which one belongs in your itinerary. Choosing a northern beach for its setting is different from stopping there because it happens to appear on a long island circuit. Decide where you will eat and where you can take a comfortable break. Check the current access arrangements for the place you intend to use, particularly where a national park is involved.
Keep a southern outing in the south
If your priority is the southern coast, plot Nai Harn, Rawai and Laem Phromthep before choosing the day's sequence. They are distinct places, so do not use their names interchangeably with a driver. A visit to the cape is a viewpoint outing rather than a guaranteed sunset appointment. For an unhurried day, choose one main coastal stop and make any viewpoint optional. Resist adding Old Town on the far side of the schedule unless town is genuinely part of the purpose; our separate walking route gives it more attention.
Match the day to the conditions
Read the current forecast and local instructions, and pay attention to beach flags when you arrive. Do not treat a familiar beach name, a photograph or a previous visit as evidence about today's water. Keep a sheltered alternative ready: an Old Town museum-and-meal outing or a shorter day near your base can be easier than repeatedly driving between beaches. With children, make the return journey and a proper break part of the plan from the beginning. Leave with enough energy to enjoy the evening rather than using every available hour on the coast.
